Can Machines Be Creative? — Artificial intelligence and the meaning of originality
(A) In 2018, a portrait created by an artificial intelligence program sold at a major auction house for more than forty times its estimated price. Since then, AI systems have composed symphonies, written poetry, designed buildings and produced films. What was once a philosophical parlour game — can a machine be creative? — has become an urgent practical question for artists, educators and industries built on human originality.
(B) The answer depends on what creativity is. The philosopher Margaret Boden influentially defined it as the production of ideas that are new, surprising and valuable, and distinguished three forms. Combinational creativity blends familiar ideas in unfamiliar ways. Exploratory creativity pushes a style's existing rules to their limits. Transformational creativity, the rarest, changes the rules themselves — the move that made jazz from blues, or cubism from perspective painting.
(C) By the first two definitions, machines already qualify. AI systems recombine patterns on a scale no human could attempt, and their outputs regularly surprise even their creators. Supporters point to science: when DeepMind's AlphaFold predicted the structures of hundreds of millions of proteins, biologists described solutions to problems that had resisted human experts for decades — surely, they argue, novelty of genuine value. If creativity is judged by the work rather than the worker, the case for machines looks strong.
(D) Critics answer that something essential is missing. Machines, they note, have no intentions: the AI portrait signifies nothing to its maker, because there is no 'maker' in the human sense — no childhood, no grief, no reason to speak. Every output is, at root, a remix of human work absorbed during training. On this view, creativity lives not in the artifact but in the act — a person meaning something by it — and the machine is best understood as an extraordinarily sophisticated brush. The creativity in an AI image, critics say, belongs to the human who chose the prompt, curated a hundred outputs, and declared one of them finished.
(E) Experiments add a twist: our judgement of creativity is biased by what we know. In controlled studies, people rate poems and paintings highly — until told a machine made them, at which point ratings drop, even for identical works. Blind tests, meanwhile, find audiences unable to reliably distinguish AI from human output in music and visual art. Both findings unsettle easy confidence: we cannot always tell machine work apart, but we value it less once we know its origin.
(F) The most useful frame may be neither machine nor human, but collaboration. Musicians already treat AI as an instrument that proposes and the artist disposes; architects generate a thousand structural options and choose three to refine. In this model, generation becomes cheap and judgement becomes precious — taste, intent and the courage to mean something become the scarce human contributions. Whether we call the machine creative may matter less than a quieter shift: creativity is ceasing to be a solitary act, and becoming a duet.
